A fun Asian-inspired Halloween treat that looks suitably ghoulish while still tasting delicious. Soft, chewy ube mochi is shaped into little ghosts and filled with a rich black sesame centre. The purple ube and jet-black sesame give them naturally spooky Halloween colours without needing loads of artificial colouring.

Ingredients
Ube mochi
- 1 cup glutinous rice flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup coconut milk
- 2 tablespoons ube halaya or ube jam
- 1 teaspoon ube extract, optional
- Cornflour, for dusting
Black sesame filling
- 1/2 cup black sesame paste
- 2 tablespoons coconut cream
- 1 tablespoon icing sugar
Decoration
- Black sesame seeds
- Melted dark chocolate for ghost eyes and mouths
Directions
Make the filling: Mix the black sesame paste, coconut cream and icing sugar until thick and smooth. Refrigerate while preparing the mochi.
Make the mochi: Combine the glutinous rice flour, sugar, coconut milk, ube jam and ube extract. Mix until completely smooth.
Cook: Microwave for around 2 minutes, stir well, then continue cooking in 30-second intervals until the mixture becomes thick, sticky and slightly translucent.
Shape: Once cool enough to handle, dust your hands and work surface with cornflour. Divide the mochi into small portions and flatten each piece.
Fill: Add a teaspoon of black sesame filling to the centre. Seal the mochi around it, then gently shape it into a little ghost with a rounded head and flowing base.
Decorate: Use tiny dots of melted dark chocolate to create spooky eyes and mouths. Sprinkle a few black sesame seeds around the serving plate.
